Today, JR East just revealed that it started working on the development of the next-generation model Shinkansen bullet train, the E10 Series. The new train will be used for the Tohoku Shinkansen and will be replacing the current E2 Series and E5 Series EMUs. This plan will be part of the "Transformation 2027" program corporate vision aimed at leveraging IT and data for maximum optimization for railway operations. The first trainsets are slated to complete by autumn 2027, which will be followed by testing and mass production before the planned 2030 entry to service.
Just like the current E2 and E5 Series plying the Tohoku Shinkansen route, each E10 Series trainset will be 10-car long. The trains was designed by UK-based design studio tangerine, which is the first foreign party responsible for the design for JR East rolling stock. The exterior of the train was design with the colors of "Tsugaru Green" and "Evening elm" to evoke the mountains of the Tohoku region.
As for the interior, the "Gran Class", the highest class of passenger travel found in the current E5 Series and E7 Series will be replaced by a more advanced version of the "TRAIN DESK", which will offer seats with seat dividers and headrest wings to provide privacy and insulation for business travelers who work while on the move. The "TRAIN DESK" cars will utilize a 2+2 seating configuration just like the regular "Green Class". The "Ordinary Class" will be utilizing a 3+2 seating configuration like other Shinkansen trains. In addition, Car No. 5 will be used for the "Hakobyun" luggage and freight forwarding service, with a special luggage door installed.
